Starting or Rebooting a PTA
Whether you’re starting a brand-new PTA or revitalizing an inactive one, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. There is a clear process, and support is available at every step.
Starting a New PTA
If your school does not currently have a PTA or PTSA, new units are chartered through Missouri PTA. This process ensures your PTA is properly established and eligible for nonprofit status, insurance coverage, and state and national support.
Rebooting or Refreshing an Inactive PTA
If your school has an inactive PTA—especially one that still has 501(c)(3) status—Springfield Council PTA can help guide the process of returning to good standing and rebuilding leadership.
In these cases, units work directly with the Springfield Council PTA president to assess status, outline next steps, and connect with Missouri PTA as needed.
What the Process Typically Includes
While each situation is different, starting or revitalizing a PTA often involves:
- An informational meeting to gauge interest
- Forming an organizing or nominating committee
- Holding a reorganizational meeting
- Electing officers and completing required training
The exact steps depend on whether a PTA is being started from scratch or reactivated.
